The Grain Offering

The natural response of a believer to Heavenly Father’s gift of eternal life is the desire to live according to God’s holy will

A prominent aspect in the religious life of an Old Testament Israelite was an ongoing worship of the Lord.  Regular offerings and sacrifices expressed thanksgiving to the Lord and remind them of the covenant promises.  One offering Old Testament worshippers used to express thanksgiving to Heavenly Father was the grain offering.  This offering was made voluntarily, out of gratitude that Heavenly Father had provided for their daily needs.  It consisted of grain ground into flour mixed in with incense.

Salt was another very important component of the grain offering.  Salt was a vital preservative that kept food from spoiling.  It reminded people of God’s promise that he would never abandon them.  In the Bible, believers today are called “salt of the earth.”  Matthew 5:13.  God desires his children to serve as a preservative in this corrupt and sinful world.  If these saints lose their faith, they become useless in glorifying God and preserving the world.  They end up being thrown out on the road leading to outer darkness.  The difference between people with salt and those without will be determined not by their outward acts, but by what is inside their heart.
