LDS Doctrine – Faith & Works:
Before a person can gain eternal life he or she must be immortal.
Without immortality man could never live with Heavenly Father. . Immortality was gained for all mankind through Christ’s atonement.
.
Because of Christ’s atonement man now has the opportunity to gain eternal life.
Gospel Principles page 74: The atonement makes it possible for those who have faith in Christ to be saved from their sins.
Christ is pictured as having paid for man’s sin, becoming man’s creditor. Now man must pay Jesus back to gain eternal life.
. . Jesus did his part, now it’s up to each person to do his or her part, to be
obedient. .
Jesus provides the opportunity, now it is man’s responsibility to “work out his own salvation”.
The Life and Teaching of Jesus & His Apostles page 361: “An outstanding doctrine of the Church is that each individual carries the responsibility to work out his own salvation, and salvation is a process of gradual development.”
This is called “Faith and Works”.
Gospel Principles page 75: “We accept Christ’s atonement by placing our faith in him. … Christ did his part to atone for our sins.
To make his atonement fully effective in our lives, we must strive to obey him and repent of our sins.”
